Biofertilizer or no-fertilizer agriculture

A page from the book 'Dirt to Soil' by Gabe Brown discussing the impact of eliminating synthetic fertilizers on agricultural yields and profitability.

I have been rereading my notes on Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown (A must read for any one interested in Regenerative Agriculture!). It remains one of the most useful narratives I know on regenerative agriculture, and every time I revisit it I find myself wanting to look at the Indian evidence more carefully.

What I am specifically curious about is case studies of farms and farmer collectives that have moved to no synthetic fertiliser, or to bio-fertilisers and bio-inputs only, and how those interventions have played out across different agro-ecological zones and cropping systems. The experience of a rainfed farmer in Bundelkhand, a paddy grower in the Cauvery delta and a cotton farmer in Vidarbha will not be the same, and I want to understand the differences in yield, soil health, input cost and farmer income over several seasons.

Three questions for this network.

  • Who are the people I should be talking to on this?
  • Does a credible compilation of Indian case studies already exist?
  • And if it does not, is anyone interested in building one with us?
